The history of the Emba Swop Shop spans almost 5 years now. We are a community development project started by the Secunda Junior Engineers in 2013. We are based on the model of a recycle swop shop which has been used in other similar projects in South Africa. Since the inception of the project we have been generously supported by Sasol.

How far we have come

In the beginning of the project we would average around 800 kgs of recyclable material at an event. We would load this onto one trailer and our shop was in one end of a room. Through dedication from everyone involved and a concerted marketing effort we have grown substantially since then. We have improved our systems and expanded our shop. We now routinely process 5 tons of recyclables at an event, we’ve even gone as high as 15 tons at a single event! We now have a recycler who uses multiple trailers and vehicles to remove the recyclables and we have also expanded our shop to cover the entire side of our room.

Historical Stats

The stats for overall history of the project since we started measuring are as follows (as of 22 July 2017):

  • 2553 kids registered
  • 132 tons of recyclables collected
    • 91 tons of glass
    • 33 tons of plastic
    • 8 tons of tin
